Naming a Team for Competition at Workplace

1.      Brainstorm

Cheer the team to brainstorm what type of image they want to project in the competition they are going to appear. For instance;

  • Do the teammates want to name themselves after a professional team?
  • Do they want the name to be quirky and funny?
  • Do they want it to be intimidating?
  • Should it be a number?
  • Should it be something completely wacky?
  • Or named after a movie or drama?

So before narrowing your list of options for a team name and selecting finalists, make sure all players are on board with the angle they want to take.

2.      Connect Your Team with Popular Things

As mentioned earlier, your name associates your team with certain values and characteristics. As such, it’s not unusual for all teams to turn to popular cultural things like knights, warriors, or imposing animals that have to represent certain values.

For example, a sports team with a lion in their name might project dominance, strength, and nobility. Similarly, a sports team named Warriors will project fearlessness, bravery, and endurance.

3.      Count on Traits Team Members Have In Common

Another way to come up with a team name is to take into consideration the things your team members have in common. For example, perhaps you all like the same type of cuisine or your kids all go to the same school.

Or perhaps you all like a certain movie or comic book franchise. By considering a common thing you all share, you have higher chances of coming up with a unique name that will also help you build team spirit.

4.      Add some Adjective

Adding an adjective is a good way to differentiate yourself from another team as well as to strengthen what type of image you want to project. A few adjectives include fighting, rioting, rumbling, amazing, and similar.

It’s a good idea to use thesaurus at this point and look up synonyms for commonly used adjectives as this will give you even more options to choose from. On top of that, it will make your name even more unique and special.

5.      Pair With a Location

If none of the above ideas smack your picture, consider choosing a mascot for your team and then pairing it with a location.

For example, if you decide to use the lion as your mascot, your team name could be Seattle Lions.

On the other hand, consider using your neighborhood name or incorporating the name of the bar or coffee shop you all frequently visit.

6.      Keep It Short

The importance of keeping the name short can’t be denied. This will make it easier to remember not only for you but also for your fans and potential sponsors.

It will also be easier to fit your name on your team’s jersey while still keeping it legible.

7.      Consider Image You Want to Project

By now, you know that your name plays a large role in how others perceive your team. As such, you need to take into consideration what kind of image you want to project.

Do you want to daunt your opponents or perhaps create an image of respect and awe? Or maybe you want to send a message that you’re a cool team that knows how to have fun?

Choose your mascot, your name, and any adjectives based on your responses.

8.      Be Distinctive

Certain names have been overused when it comes to naming a team. As a case in point, there are over 1600 sports teams in the USA alone whose name includes the word Eagles.

It pays to do a bit of research and choose a name that hasn’t been overdone to make sure your team has a distinctive and unique name.

9.      Keep Your Logo in Mind

Finally, as you go through the process of choosing a name for your sports team, keep your future logo in mind. Choose a name that lends itself well to a logo and can easily be recognized even in smaller sizes.

10.  Consider Sponsorships

If the team has a sponsor, yet the sponsor is still willing to let the players select the team name, always be sure to include the sponsor in the team naming and color-selecting process.

This shows that you value the sponsor’s input and value the sponsorship as a whole and that’s a good sign of respect.

11.  Put Together a Committee:

After you have decided on a theme for the name, the coach may want to put together a committee to narrow down the potential names.

This committee may include the team captains or just a group of players that the coach wants to make the decision.

This committee will then take input from the rest of the players and put together a list of five-to-seven team names, asking players to vote on their top three.

Whichever team name has the most votes will become the official team name for that season.

12.  Choose Colors

Most youth sports jerseys or uniforms consist of a primary and a secondary color. Again, the players should follow the same process they did to select the team name when choosing the colors to brainstorm.

Consider sponsorships, and put together a list. Brainstorming is important here because the players can either choose to do standard colors or more of an alternative color for their uniforms.

Going the latter route will certainly make their uniforms unique and give them the ability to stand out more within their youth league; however, this route should be taken with caution.

That’s because the wrong combination can make a uniform look poor and sloppy. In the case of a youth team that has a sponsorship; it’s always a grateful gesture to use the sponsor’s brand colors on the uniforms.

Final Thoughts

Remember, there is no “I” in “team,” so if the team you coach or manage, it’s important for everyone to work together to pick a name all players can be proud of.

Hopefully, we’ve got you thinking about how many great names are out there. And how important a name can be to your team. The right name can create a great first impression.

Leave a lasting impression. It can help establish an identity for your team members, build recognition among your opponents, and provide a rallying cry for your fan.
